Healthy Minds Matter
And you matter more than you know to our Silent Samaritan clients who rely on your
generous donations to help fund their road to improved mental health. From August of
2016 to August of 2017, seven therapists completed 322 session hours with Silent
Samaritan clients-a value in excess of $40,000.
The youngest client was 12, the oldest 81. Males accounted for 24 percent and females
for 76 percent of the sessions. Overwhelmingly these clients were based in LaPorte
and Porter counties, but Marshall also was represented in addition to Berrien in the
State of Michigan. We continue to see clients at our Elston suite and Commerce
Square office in Michigan City as well as at Bethany Lutheran Church in LaPorte.
For those individuals who seek counseling, their issues are weighty. For our generous
supporters, it might be helpful to know that we address a very broad spectrum of issues
affecting individuals and families including autism, post-traumatic stress, addiction, loss,
challenges of aging, and other diagnoses such as anxiety and depression along with
parenting and relationship matters.
There is a particularly effective modality used with trauma sufferers called EMDR (Eye
Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Last year, only one of the Samaritan
therapists was trained and certified to use this strategy, which meant that she saw
nearly all of our trauma clients-quite a burdensome caseload. Now, through a grant
from the Duneland Health Council, a majority of our therapists are qualified to use
EMDR and to work with trauma clients.
It is all about clients. In spite of rising expenses these days, the cost of a regular
therapy session continues to be $130 per counseling hour. With your continued support
of our Center in general and with generous financial support specifically designated for
the Silent Samaritan Campaign, clients in need will have the resources to seek and to
achieve wellbeing. Healthy minds do matter.
Thank you for your past and continued support!
