The Samaritan Center of Michigan City announces the addition of Life Coaching and Career Counseling to the services it provides in Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan. The Center has offered therapeutic and faith-based counseling for children, adolescents, and adults for the past 34 years. It is located at 340 Commerce Square, Michigan City.

Gordon Medlock, Ph.D., a licensed clinical social worker with over 20 years of experience guiding individuals through challenging life transitions, will be offering Individual and group sessions to help people deal with important career and life transitions.

What is Life Coaching?

What is life coaching, and how does it differ from traditional psychotherapy?

"It's a process that helps people develop the skills and attitudes that lead to more fulfilling and meaningful lives," Gordon says. "Life coaching focuses on helping individuals create a positive life vision in areas such as relationships, work, and self-development. At the same time, the life coach works with participants to clarify and overcome the barriers that limit their capacity to realize that vision. Those barriers are often self-imposed, based on limiting beliefs and habits that keep us stuck in routines that are familiar and often comfortable, but that also limit our ability to live the lives we truly yearn for."

A Positive Approach

Unlike traditional psychotherapy, life coaching focuses on optimizing growth and learning. If your past experiences and beliefs somehow prevent you from taking the steps towards a more fulfilling life including your work life, then life coaching can be very helpful. Cost per individual or a group session will be explained in the initial phone interview with Gordon.

If you feel overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, grief, or unresolved trauma in your life, then traditional psychotherapy is more appropriate for you. The Samaritan Center has licensed psychologists and social workers for that kind of work which is frequently covered by insurance.

Types of Life Coaching

There are various types of life coaching, depending on the individual's specific concerns and focus for personal or professional growth.

  • Career Coaching –to support career transitions such as career changes, job searches, or starting a new business; or career development in one's current role or organization
  • Executive Coaching –working with organizations to provide coaching for high value individuals to develop skills and/or improve performance
  • Family & Relationship Coaching—to improve communication and develop more supportive and fulfilling relationships
  • Personal Growth Coaching—focusing on the inner work of developing the individual's authentic, best self. All types of coaching include this personal growth work.
